Team Rocker Returns in a podcast! Welcome to today's episode. We have a short and sweet one. Basically, we have the second to last set of Bass. That of course being Bass Set 2. Now, Bass Set 2, we don't really have much to say on because it's pretty much just a reskin version of Base Set. Well, with that out of the way, let's get started on this quick episode. Well, let's get started. Base Set 2 was released on February 14th, 2000, has 130 cards, and the most expensive card is the Charizard, selling for $392, as of the time of recording. This is about $100 cheaper than the original base set Charizard. It has a full set market value of $1,341. And while that is only $500 less than base, um, base set 2 has no first edition or first edition shadowless. Judah, do you have anything from this set? I don't Nope, I don't have anything. The main difference between base and base set 2 are the symbols. On Bass, it's just the first edition stamp, which is located right next to the um the type of Pokemon. For example, on Charizard, it says Flame Pokemon, and right next to it is a first edition stamp. But on base set 2, unlike all other sets in base, there is no first edition stamp because it's second edition. There's a 2 with a Pokeball on the other side next the weight. Which actually, now that I'm looking at it, did you know that Charizard is only 200 pounds? Really? That's like The average American person is taller and heavier than Charizard. Not heavier. No, 200 pounds? That's average American. My search history is gonna be so weird. What is it? Uh the average American adult weighs 181 pounds. Which is really heavy. Pretty much same as Charizard. Oh, yeah. We all weigh the same. So the other big difference between base set and base set 2 is one you might not expect. It's actually the holofoil pattern. Base set in English used a pattern called the Starlight Holofoil, known by collectors as Starfoil, which kind of looks like a bunch of stars in a blurry background. Yep. The base set 2. Star holofoil is stars. Wow, you would never guess it. The base set 2 holofoil pattern is called the Cosmos Holofoil pattern. If it sounds like you've heard this before, it's because you have. Pokemon still uses this pattern to this day on most modern promo cards found in boxes. Um, however, that is only true in English. For Japanese base, it used Cosmos from the very beginning. And then the Starfoil was just used in English. And base and um they learned from their mistake on base set too. And for also Team Rocket, they also use Cosmos Holofoil. Yep. And I honestly think that Cosmos is cooler because it doesn't blur the background. It is. Yeah, it's just better. So I'm looking at the lineup between base set and base set 2. Base set, the top five most expensive cards are the Charizard, Blastoise, Venusaur, Alakazam, Mewtwo. Base set 2 has the Charizard Blastoise Venusaur. Um, so those are all the same, but the Mewtwo is more expensive than the Alakazam in only base set 2. And every card is a little bit cheaper in base set 2. Like the Charizard is about $100 cheaper, the Blastoise is uh also about $100 cheaper. The Venusaur is about $80 cheaper, the Mewtwo is $20 cheaper, and the Alakazam is about $30 cheaper. So base set 2 is just a less expensive base set. But it does allow you to get your hands on that iconic Charizard for a little bit less. I mean, that's exactly what base set or that's exactly what base set 2 was. They released it, it was, oh wow, base that's popular, let's reprint it. Mm-hmm. That that's it. Well, like it's not um it's not a great set. It would be an it would be a great standalone set. If they just released base or they just released base set 2, then it would have been great. But because base set 2 pretty much has the same cards, like there is a little bit of jungle in there, but like not much, it's it's not much better of a set. Yeah, well, technically speaking, base set 2 is actually a very good set. It has $1,300 of cards, has a card that's almost $400, but compared to the rest of base, it's not. If you released a set like this, but maybe changed up the artworks but had the same prices in Mega Evolution, it would be one of the better sets in Mega Evolution. Yeah, that is true. It's just not good compared to it's not a it's not a good set simply because it's not an original set. Every new set that comes out has I don't has a couple like bulk reprints that have the same bulk art, but none of the expensive chases are the exact same as another set. This is pretty much just a control C, control V of base mixing some jungle just for fun. Yep. Which is kind of annoying. Yeah. Which it's it's although the good thing is if you want to master a base set, and this one pretty much has every single good card from base, just not from Team Rocket. But most good cards from base, but just like not. But just like cheaper. Also, if you want a rip for that insane Charizard, I think the market price on a pack of um base set two is. It's definitely the most affordable. Yeah, it's a lot less. Here, let's look at price charter. I think it's about six. It's about $415, but it says it's $186 in a grade 7. So I feel like you could just buy a grade seven and scrap it and rip it. So like I feel like grading packs is counterproductive unless it's a 10, in which it's worth more. So it doesn't seem like it's a lot, like it doesn't seem like it's a crazy um a crazy expensive pack. And it would be a and if you want to rip something vintage, it isn't a horrible option, but like it's not it's not as impressive to say I ripped a pack of base set than I ripped a pack of base set too. I mean, it's still very impressive if someone like who knows what that means knows, oh my god, you ripped a p a pack of base set too? That's crazy. That's an insane pack to rip. It is an insane pack. Just compared to the rest of base. So what I'm seeing on TCG Player is that the Charizard is actually more expensive or more expensive, yeah, than the pack. Uh, it says it has no listings, but the market price on the pack is about $354. Well, the market price on the Charizard is $392. Wow, that's actually really good. Usually you want to open, especially for vintage packs, you you always want to try to find boxes or booster boxes where the pack or um thing a lot of the time if you find a pack where the most expensive where the pack is more expensive than the most expensive card, why would you rip that? Yeah. There's no point. That's you won't make your money. That's why I like modern. You can rip a $5, or that is a fever dream. You can rip a $15 pack and get a $200 card. Well, with vintage, you can rip a $1,000 pack and get a $500 card. And and then like you still lose money even if you pulled the crazy card. Yeah, it's just not worth it opening. I I see people, or I don't see it, but I see on YouTube people like, I'm opening platinum. There's not a s I don't think there's a single set in platinum that is worth its money and pack. Yeah, it's just not worth it. So let's go back on track to base set two. And Judo, what is your most oh, not your most expensive card from base set two? No one has base set two. Like I think I had the Zapdos for like 30 seconds, and then I traded it to my brother, which I realized was like a really bad idea, because it already went up 15 bucks. So and I sold and I gave it to my little brother like right before it started going up. So yeah. What I meant to say is Judo, what's your favorite card from Base Set 2? I know that there isn't much to choose from. My favorite card is the Scyther. Ooh. Okay, go on. I don't know if this episode is going to come out. Wait, Scyther? No, no, no, no, no. Stay away from him. No, but but I I just really like the the artwork. It's it's it's actually not that good. Like it's not that creative, but the artwork's good, it's just not creative artwork. It's so beautiful, and I don't know if this the episode will come out. I think it's gonna come out. Yeah, there's a game episode where I have PTSD from Scyther. Well, you you'd have to you you don't understand. Yeah. Um, if watch our latest game episode, you you will not I think I yeah, I think it'll be our latest. This is weird. But Scyther is my favorite, um, because Scyther is just awesome. I'm realizing that every single set that has a Scyther in it, I'm just gonna say that's my favorite Pokemon. And that's gonna be really boring. Yeah. Even though I kind of hate Scyther. Like, I don't like um okay, so my favorite card is drumroll, please. I love the sea king. I love the sea king because most of the holofoils, like, they're cool, but they have no real art. There's just uh some cool art of the Pokemon, but there's no background. So I love these like cheaper, common, uncommon holo um non-hollows that um that are just better because they have actual art. Yeah, I agree. A lot of these earlier Bay Set holo foils that are like the best cards are really important. Like Yeah. Well, honestly, Base Set 2 is a little forgettable. It's just a reprint of base set, and I don't think there's much more to it. Like, it's an okay set, sure, but it's literally entirely a reprint. There's not a single new card in there. We're really sorry this episode was very short. But we have nothing to say, because this is just base set. Just watch the episode of base set. Watch the episode of base set, and then every time we say base set, just add two. Except for the part where we talk about how good it is and how expensive the cards are and how like nostalgic it is. Because it's not nostalgic. Like, maybe it is for some people. I mean, it is all of base set. It's way more nostalgia nostalgic. Yeah, I mean, there's nothing to talk about. Yeah. We've been like it's so hard to tell. And we really tried to come up with like a good outline for this episode, but like we're really sorry about it. Yeah, we're sorry they can't do this. You turn this on, expect this Bay Set 2 is like your favorite set, and you expected a whole big thing. We we just don't have enough to write about. Put in the comments if you want, if you have more information about Basset 2 that because maybe at some point if we learn more, we might like re-release the episode. That sounds good. If it maybe, if if there's more stuff that comes out, or you guys put in the comment section more stuff that, oh wow, that's like very unique, um, cool information. Yeah. That would be really cool. Which I'm sure there's something, and I'm sure someone somewhere loves Bay Set too. But that's saying they actually sat through this episode. Yeah. This episode wasn't our finest work. But it's also not the finest set. So, um Theo. And I'm Judah. And we'll see you, trainers later.
